Chives
Allium schoenoprasum.
Grasuitjie. Seasonal. Mostly used as a home cuisine herb but has
healing properties as well.
A perennial, grows in clumps to a height of 50cm, deep green onion
like leaves and heads of mauve-pink flowers in summer.
Full sun or partial shade, grows easily in any soil, water
regularly.
Parts used: leaves, flowers
Medicinal uses: blood cleansing, tonic effect, helps prevent colds
and flu, stimulates the appetite.
Culinary uses: a prime culinary herb, more than just a garnish.
Snip leaves into salads, soft cheeses, sauces, soups and dips or
fold into omlettes and egg dishes. Use flowers as a garnish. |
