Planning and Recordkeeping
□ Keep weekly gardening diary and records up to date.
□ Compare actual results and actions with plans and make
notes for next year where necessary.
Propagation (See
recommended varieties.)

□ Basil
□ Dill - last month to sow dill

□ Spinach
□ Lettuce
□ Rocket
□ Beetroot
□ Runner Beans - last month to sow
□ Artichokes - last month to sow
Start Sowing:
□ Carrots
Planting and Thinning Out
□ Buy herb plants: mint x 1, oregano x 2, thyme x 1 and rosemary x 1
and transplant into permanent beds or bigger containers.
□ Buy veggie seedlings and transplant into beds.
Thin out to the desired distances:
□ Beetroots
□ Carrots
□ Lettuces
Watering
□ Water regularly in this heat, especially containers, salad crops
and chilli bushes. The latter will drop their flowers if they wilt.
Fertilizing
□ Fertilize once with a liquid fertilizer, or every fortnight with a
liquid fertilizer at half strength.
□ Containers will love a diluted feeding once a week.
Pruning
□ Pinch out growing tips of herbs and tomatoes.
□ Remove flowers from basil and parsley to prolong their life.
□ Prune herbs to keep them in shape.
Weeding
□ Remove weeds regularly as they appear. Don’t give them a chance to
flower and seed.
Pests and Disease
□ Be on the lookout for aphids, caterpillars and red spider mite.
□ Spray with a natural insecticide if necessary. Ask local
garden centre for a recommendation.
□ Highlight the occurrence of pest and disease, measures taken (if
any), and results.
Harvesting
□ Harvest herbs and veggies as required for daily use.
□ Basil should be looking gorgeous. Make use
of the abundance by cutting one or two bushes back by about two
thirds.
□ Make pesto and freeze for winter use.
Note: When freezing pesto don’t add the nuts and cheese as per
the recipe. Add them after
defrosting.
Clean-up
□ Coriander will tend to send up mature leaves. Discard the bushes
and rather replace with new ones.
□ Remove debris to the compost heap, or use as a mulch elsewhere in
the garden. |
